Paulina Vega of Colombia crowned as Miss Universe 2014
Miss Colombia, Paulina Vega Dieppa was crowned Miss Universe 2014, the 63rd edition of the pageant held at the Florida International University Arena in Miami, Florida, USA, beating out contestants from 87 other countries.
Miss USA, Nia Sanchez of Las Vegas, Nevada finished as 1st run-up. Miss Ukraine, Diana Harkusha is 2nd run-up. A surprised excellent performance by Miss Netherlands, Yasmin Verheijen earned her place as 3rd run-up. And finally, Miss Jamaica, Kaci Fennell ended as 4th run-up, which got a big reaction of disapproval from the crowd.
The non-inclusion of Miss Spain and Miss Philippines in the top 5 was shocking.
The Top 10 semi-finalists were Argentina – Valentina Ferrer, Australia – Tegan Martin, Philippines – Mary Jean Lastimosa, Spain – Desiree Cordero Ferrer, and Venezuela – Migbelis Castellanos.
The Top 15 quarter-finalists were Brazil – Melissa Gurgel, France – Camille Cerf, India – Noyonita Lodh, Indonesia – Elvira Devinamira, and Italy – Valentina Bonariva.
Miss Puerto Rico, Gabriela Berrios was chosen by a selected panel of judges as Miss Photogenic Universe
Miss Nigeria, Queen Celestine was voted Miss Congeniality Universe by her fellow delegates
Miss Indonesia, Elvira Devinamira won the ‘Best National Costume’ Award edging four other finalists in a fierce battle over Twitter.
22 year old Paulina is the granddaughter of a legendary tenor, Gastón Vega. She is from Barranquilla, Colombia and is studying business administration. She is her country’s second Miss Universe, being the first Luz Marina Zuluaga, won back in 1958.
